  1. Cole,
Doing serious photography and vacationing is a real challenge. We just returned this week from a month in Italy to visit our son and his family that live there. We have four grandkids all under the age of eight. I struggled with if I would bring my entire camera gear and tripod along for the trip. An hour before going out the door to catch the plane I unloaded my gear and only took one lens and a camera. I just knew that this wouldn’t be the trip for the work I like to do, so I made videos and creative images of the kids of their time in Italy. I did see many possible images I would have loved to stop and spend time with but in the rush of our travels it wouldn’t have been possible. I have found that from these situations that some potential great images are only recorded in my mind.

  2. My husband is a really good sport when we are on vacation. We do have camera free times, so that way he gets my undivided attention and I stay in the moment (sort of, my mind is always composing shots). I find that it’s a good skill to have to be able to take photos on the fly, there is a certain amount of luck that goes with that, but it’s a thrill to get good shots when the conditions are less than ideal. When my friends go on vacation to exotic locales and they don’t even take their camera I want to weep.
Cole your selection of vacation photos are exquisite! Love, love, love ‘Hana”

  3. Cole,
don’t I know this dilemma! I’m still getting to the point that my wife won’t get furious that I disappear all of a sudden, staying behind photographing something, or wandering on a side path, while she (or they, with my children) carry on…
Or when I (try to) stop along a road to “just take this one shot”…
But, as you say, we have to do reach our compromises, and it’s always better to take some shots than none at all ;-)!
