Dear Cole,

I've just returned from two weeks on the Oregon Coast and had an incredible time. These are amongst the most stunningly beautiful beaches in the world and I had absolutely nothing to do for two weeks but to photograph them. Focusing on something exclusively for a long period of time is very inspiring and liberating. I want to give thanks to my wife Dyan who made this possible and who for two weeks, was the family taxi driver, referee, vet, ranch hand, cook, nurse and psychiatrist!

Because I came home with so many images and because I still haven't caught up with things yet, I'm just going to tease you with a few images right now, and will put together a proper newsletter in a couple of weeks.

I came home with a very wide range of subject matter and was happy to add a number of new images to the "Lone Man" series. Perhaps I'm most excited about the two new images I was able to add to the "Harbinger" series. I'll introduce those in the next newsletter.

Most of all, this trip reminded me how much I love black and white and its ability to see beneath the surface.

Cole

Tidbits:

  • "The Ghosts of Auschwitz and Birkenau" will be featured in the February issue of B&W Magazine.
  • While wandering on the Bandon Beaches, I ran across a photographer whose work I admire, Huntington Witherill. It was nice to meet and to speak with him.
  • For the photographers who subscribe to my newsletter, the Sept/Oct issue of LensWork has a very interesting editorial by the publisher Brooks Jensen. It's worth reading.
  • Thanks to a good friend and photographer (Ken Mucke) a Romanian publication, Foto-Video Digital Magazine, will be featuring my work in a 12 image retrospective.
  • I was asked to test a new product by Singh-Ray, an innovative filter manufacturer who makes the Vari-ND filter that is so critical to my art. I cannot talk about the new product until it's announced sometime in October.
  • What is Art? Watch the Video and learn from these experts.
  • Pilobolus! Very fun and amazing!
  • ...innocence of eye has a quality of its own. It means to see as a child sees, with freshness and acknowledgment of the wonder; it also means to see as an adult sees who has gone full circle and once again sees as a child - with freshness and an even deeper sense of wonder. - Minor White
